A-B-E (Activity Bursts Everywhere) for Fitness.
A-B-E (Activity Bursts Everywhere) for Fitness. By popular demand, we're pleased to announce the availability of a new Turn the Tide program, A-B-E for FitnessTM – a free, web-based exercise program designed specifically to help adults increase their physical activity throughout the day.
These days, most adults are well aware of the health benefits of physical activity but many find it difficult to make time in their busy day to exercise. Thanks to our new online video program, A-B-E for FitnessTM, being active on a daily basis can be easy and fun, and best of all, it's free. A-B-E for FitnessTM is available at http://www.abeforfitness.com.
According to the federal government's Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, adults need at least two and a half hours (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activity that works all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week. In recent years, physical activity research has evolved to reflect compelling evidence that physical activity accumulated in brief bouts spread over the course of a day is "powerful medicine" and provides many of the benefits recognized from longer daily bouts.
The A-B-E for FitnessTM program was designed specifically to help adults meet those recommendations for daily physical activity by offering a library of more than 50 videos offering guided physical activity routines, each of which can be done in 3 to 5 minutes. A-B-E for FitnessTM offers a variety of options based on users' time, interests, needs, and fitness levels, in different settings – the home, office and waiting area.
We teamed up with Dr. Stephan Esser, a Clinical Fellow and specialist in Physical Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and his wife, Tiffany, a personal trainer, to develop the program. They bring their passion for exercise and explain the exercises clearly and provide options to perform each activity in a basic or more advanced manner.
The idea behind A-B-E for FitnessTM was sparked by Dr. Katz from his experience over the past several years as he has spoken to thousands of people about our school-based physical activity program, A-B-E for FitnessTM. Everywhere he took A-B-E for FitnessTM, he would get the question: "What about us? What about the parents and the teachers?" Until recently his answer was: "we're working on it!" A-B-E for FitnessTM makes it possible to fit physical activity into any day, just as ABC makes it fit into any school day. We plan to expand the video library over time because our goal really is: physical
activity that can fit in everywhere, every day, for every body!
The benefits of daily physical activity include improved health status and well-being, increased energy levels, reduced risk for heart disease and cancer, reduced stress, improved mood, and improved productivity at work and school. Since the A-B-E for FitnessTM program is short, doable, and fun, it can help people change their perception of physical activity so that being more physically active becomes part of their normal lives. A-B-E for FitnessTM is sponsored by the California Walnut Board and Commission (www.walnuts.org). |

National Exchange for Weight Loss Resistance.
We're also pleased to announce the National Exchange for Weight Loss Resistance (www.newlr.com) – a lively newly launched web community where people who can't seem to lose weight no matter what they do can find solidarity, understanding, reliable information, and the opportunity to trouble-shoot the problem together.
Weight loss resistance is just recently being recognized by the medical community, and the causes are still uncertain. There are certainly times when people overestimate the calories they are expending in physical activity, or underestimate the calories they are taking in – but true resistance to weight loss clearly exists as well. Among the factors that can account for weight loss resistance are various hormonal disorders, from hypothyroidism to insulin resistance to leptin resistance; a wide array of genetic factors related to resting energy expenditure; the bacterial flora of the GI tract; and potentially some environmental exposures.
The intent of the National Exchange for Weight Loss Resistance is to help people struggling with weight loss resistance find others who really understand what they are going through. By sharing frustrations, and insights, the Exchange is hoped to produce both solidarity and real solutions. The web platform is designed to facilitate an exchange of ideas and stories among those who suffer from weight loss resistance, as well as bring expert guests to the site.
According to Dr. Katz, initially the focus is just on establishing a thriving community committed to sharing, understanding, and problem-solving. But eventually, he'd like to turn this forum into a research tool as well – gather data, and use what we learn to solve the problem. "Ideally, over time, the Exchange will put itself out of business – by helping to make weight loss resistance disappear!" |

Need a program to help with your health promotion efforts – look no further!
We're collaborating with the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center to spread the word about the New England Region PHINDER- (Promising Health Interventions Inventoried by a Network of Diverse Experts for Regional Application) Clearinghouse.
Prevention, health promotion, and chronic disease management programs have the potential to make a positive impact on our nation's health status and save the nation trillions of dollars in unnecessary health care spending. While wellness and prevention programs have been in existence for decades, they have never been shared in a comprehensive manner for large-scale uptake.
A flood of factors into our daily lives contribute to the development of obesity and chronic diseases in children and adults alike. To stop the flood, we need to build a levee- and for everyone to be part of that process, they need to get their hands on a sandbag' that suits their situation. That's just what PHINDER provides: health promotion programs for diverse settings, many of which are free, so that everyone can be part of the solution!
Many promising health promotion practices have been devised for diverse settings such as worksites, schools, communities, etc.; however, universal access to a detailed searchable inventory of such practices did not exist. PHINDER was developed to do just that. According to RADM Michael R. Milner, Assistant Surgeon General, HHS Regional Health Administrator, and PHINDER Advisory board member, "PHINDER supports our departments' national healthcare reform efforts that promote prevention practices at the community level and will help assist parents, teachers, policy makers, health leaders and other 'prevention champions' locate tools to empower positive change which promotes healthy living."
PHINDER was developed through a collaboration of the CDC-funded Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD) – CT Chapter, the Connecticut Cancer Partnership/CT State Department of Public Health, and the Commissioners of Heath in CT, ME, MA, NH, RI, and VT. And, best of all, like all Turn the Tide programs, PHINDER is available free of charge and can be accessed at http://yalegriffinprc.org/CommunityConnections/PHINDER.aspx. |

NuVal Nutrition Quality Labeling in Independence, MO school cafeterias – an early look ...
Bringing the NuVal nutritional food scoring system to school cafeterias is just one way Turn the Tide is helping kids learn more about making healthy food choices – and making it really easy at the same time! NuVal scores foods from 1-100, the higher the score, the more nutritious it is. This past winter, we helped to bring NuVal to the Independence MO school cafeterias to help students learn more about making healthy food choices and improve their diets. Were also helping to evaluate the impact of using the NuVal food scoring system in the schools and will share those findings as they are available. Check it out here: www.nuval.com/vidoes. |
Stay tuned for updates in future issues of our Newsletter.
